There have been numerous reports by Durban locals of a young surfer who was sucked inside the pier on Sunday at New Pier. According to witnesses on the scene, no body was recovered or seen despite lifeguards and surfers attempting a rescue.
It’s not clear whether the young surfer managed to get washed out the other side of the pier and paddle away to safety out of sight from witnesses, or if he indeed drowned. ZagSpy is currently trying to get verification from Durban Lifeguards. The low rock levels between the pier pylons are currently creating a lot of wash filtering through the pier, making it a hazard for inexperienced surfers to get too close.
