Shark Sighting Puts Newcastle Surfest in Australia On Hold

Following a fatal shark attack recently on Australia’s east coast, authorities and ocean users have been on red-alert.

The Hunter Business Boardrider Pro Junior currently being contested at Newcastle’s Merewether beach, as well as the Sanbah Cadet Cup and Dalton Lawyers Girls competitions at Dixon Park beach, were put on hold on Saturday after a shark was sighted at nearby Burwood beach at approximately 10:00am.

J-Bay’s Dylan Lightfoot was in the water contesting his Round 1 heat in the Pro Junior when the competition was called off. The Newcastle Surfest resumed on Sunday with a jet ski patrolling the lineup.
