The California Lottery’s latest ad campaign will leave any surfer with a distinctly bad taste in their mouth. They’ve used a photo of professional surfer Bethany Hamilton (who lost an arm in a shark attack in 2003) in their ‘BELIEVE’ campaign, aimed at making you think you’ve got a shot of overcoming the odds. With the odds of winning the lottery at a staggering 1 in 175 million, and the chances of being attacked by a shark estimated at 1 in 11.5 million, you really would have to ‘believe’ to become a winner. Whatever the numbers say, using an ordeal as horrific as a shark attack to promote gambling scores you a fat zero in our books.
