Reported neck-breaking wipeout at Dunes

A Cape Town surfer suffered an unconfirmed neck-breaking wipeout this past Saturday after a collision with the barely submerged Dunes sandbank. Reports suggest the injured surfer was helped to the beach, before being airlifted to hospital to receive treatment. The injury highlights the dangers a wipeout or awkward fall can pose when surfing over a shallow sandbank, and we’re holding thumbs the injured surfer makes a full and speedy recovery. [Edit] – The surfer has been identified as Richard Calothi and says he suffered a broken C7 vertebrae, but the prognosis looks good for a full recovery. He is currently walking, but with much pain.

Ouch! I wish this poor, unfortunate surfer a speedy recovery…. and a quick return to the water.
