Shark attacks diver on KZN south coast

Tues 28 June 2011 – A 22 year-old American research diver has been attacked by what is suspected to be a 3-metre long Dusky shark. He was diving off Aliwal Shoal, which is situated about 5km offshore from Umkomaas on the KZN south coast.

The victim was bitten on the leg and rushed to hospital where he was undergoing treatment from a specialist.

Meanwhile Geremy Cliff from the Sharks Board has issued a warning to all beach-users to avoid going into the ocean during intense Sardine activity and has reported that all shark nets have been removed between Salt Rock on the KZN north coast and Port Edward on the KZN south coast.
