Press Release
For Immediate Attention
5 March 2012
The Quiksilver Goodwave invitational surfing event has been put on “heads up” alert for Wednesday 7 March. The ocean has started to show signs of calming following a few days of heavy swell and weather caused by Cyclone Irina and is now looking to produce the best few days of surf along Durban’s Golden Mile. With a good swell size and period, favourable winds and correct tides.
A “heads up” alert call lets invited surfers, alternates and contest officials know that the event could possibly run on a specific day and that everyone needs to be ready and waiting, a 24hr call is made the morning before the event giving everyone time to get to Durban to prepare. Should conditions meet expectations on the the morning of the event then the GO call is given and it is ON.
Thirty-two of South Africa’s best surfers have been selected (www.goodwave.co.za/new/index.asp?page=Surfers) plus 10 alternates. The event will run at either New Pier, North Beach or Bay in what hopes to be the best day of surf in the allotted 6 months waiting period. R25 000 is on offer with the winner claiming R15 000. A team of jet ski operators will be used to assist surfers back into the line-up to maximise the amount of waves ridden in the thirty-minute heats. The panel of judges will be looking for a combination of radical power manoeuvres and clean tube riding.
The Quiksilver Goodwave is presented by Zigzag Surfing Magazine and sanction by Surfing South Africa. The surfers in the event will be powered by Red Bull.
