It wasn’t only her own spirited boy that single mom, Anne Wright, helped nurture into a surfing champion. During her involvement with eThekwini Surfing through the years, Anne’s been ‘surfing mom’ to generations of young rippers. So she knows how to handle surf-stoked groms.
Anne’s son, Warwick Wright was crowned 2000 ISA World Junior Champ in Durban.
Assisted by coaches, Mikey Venter and Fika Ngubane, Anne and her team will be presenting free surf lessons to underprivileged kids and adults during the Umhlanga Summer Festival between 10 – 23 December.
Umhlanga’s Main Beach doesn’t always see many underprivileged visitors during the holiday period, so if you know of a group or an individual that will benefit from the joys of learning to surf, bring them along or suggest they head down there to keep Anne, Fika and Mikey busy.

You’ll find them under the Lizzard / Hurricane gazebo at Main Beach. Sign up on the beach (or book ahead) and Anne and her fully qualified* crew will take care of the rest.
* Both Mikey and Fika are qualified lifeguards and have passed their ISA Coaching tests.

LEARN TO SURF AT THE UMHLANGA SUMMER FESTIVAL
Anne Wright (Durban) has been involved in the surfing world for more than 20 years. From watching her own son Wok grow up surfing and being crowned World Champ, to now encouraging new kids to take to the water. Anne is an Internationally accredited Contest Director and will be overseeing the Lizzard Hurricane Summer Surf event which will be opening up the annual Umhlanga Summer Festival on 12th December 2015. Anne also sits on the board of Directors for Surfing South Africa.
Fika Ngubane (Umdloti) and Mikey Venter (La Lucia) have both been coaching for over three years and are qualified lifesavers, both have also passed their ISA Coaching tests. Fika and Mikey will be offering free surf lessons to underprivileged kids, which will be sponsored by Ethekweni Surfriders Association. This will all be done in a fun summer environment and surf learners will all be treated to chilled Just Juice after their lessons.
Anne Wright said: ‘I have watched both Mikey and Fika grow up surfing from tiny kids and I am delighted to see how they are now coaching surfing. Surfing is a wonderful lifestyle and I hope a lot of kids and adults come down to the beach for lessons over the summer at Umhlanga.’
