The backline at Nahoon Reef is like a second home for most of the Slummies surfing community, so when one of their surfing brothers need some help (whether asked for or not), the helping hands are quick to come to their assistance.
That’s why, as the news filtered through the lineup that long-time Nahoon local Dean Gierke had begun the massive challenge of dealing with being diagnosed with cancer, the Nahoon Reef Surfers Foundation rallied together to see how they could help.
They’re looking to gather funds to help pay for Dean’s day-to-day living expenses, as although his medical aid is likely to cover most of the costs of treatment, Dean’s ability to work has been largely restricted.

One of our fellow surfers Dean Gierke is facing a massive challenge having recently been diagnosed with cancer.
A group of us have banded together to raise funds to help him through this difficult time.
Dean has a medical aid that we hope will cover the majority of his medical bills, but unfortunately over the past couple of months he has been severely limited in his income earning capacity. Having undergone two operations and facing more intensive treatment, Dean is facing an uphill battle in the months ahead, as he will have little ability to work.
All contributions will be appreciated. Please put your name as reference on the deposit, so Dean knows who to thank. Or if you wish to remain anonymous, then we are happy for you to do so.
All proceeds will be managed to ensure Dean’s basic living costs are covered.
In the event of the funds exceeding Dean’s needs, then the foundation will look to channel the funds to a worthy cause, agreed on by the fund committee.
