Llandudno, Cape Town – small, but perfectly groomed waves greeted the contestants for the 2015 edition of the popular RVCA Rolling Retro surf event. With an offshore wind blowing and two to three-foot waves pouring through, the contestants went out on their retro-style vintage surfboards in this one-of-a-kind surf event. This event was all about old-school surfing and retro moves.

Stylish cut-backs and carves were the order of the day, as old school judging criteria saw the surfers opt for the surf moves from yesteryear, riding one of the vintage boards selected from the Vudu Surf collection. Surfers like Mikey February, Royden Bryson and Tristan Gardner were the stand-outs from the start, along with Jasper Eales, Tash Mentasti and Dunty La Trobe. Apart from the retro ripping, the event was all about having fun, and everyone seemed to be doing just that on a beautiful Sunday in the Cape.

“It was an amazing day of surfing with such a good vibe down here,” said contest organiser Kai Linder. “A flawless summer day here in the Cape, with ideal conditions at Llandudno for the event.”

There was some very smooth retro performances throughout the day, with a few barrels and some classic moves. At the end of it all, Royden Bryson was deemed the best surfer, while Tasha Mentasti was the best woman surfer and Luke Slijpen was the best grom.

Along with the retro surfing event, another first was the bodysurfing event, with bodysurfers hitting the chilly lineup with their handslides, to hook into a few runners. Winning the bodysurfing event was Brian Little, Harry Alcock, Ian Thurtell and Sacha Specker.

After the prizegiving, the bands got rocking at the Llandudno Surf Lifesaving club, with Bilderberg Motel, Taleswapper, The Dyna Jets, The Larter Brothers and Roastin’ Records keeping the party going into the evening.

The event helped to raise funds for the Llandudno Surf Lifesaving Club. The RVCA Rolling Retro was presented by El Jimador, with Vans and Vudu Surf as supporting sponsors.
