Religious Zag reader and Stellies med student, Jaco Roodt, used his membership to the varsity’s “Meerhoff’s House Committee” to organise 30 fellow learners to clean up Stillbaai in the pouring rain. For documenting his efforts, Jaco gains entry into our Tuffy Beach Clean-Up competition, putting himself in the running to win a brand new shred stick compliments of Firewire and Share The Stoke Foundation.
Stellies ‘Meerhoff’s House Committee,’ singing in the rain!
“I saw the opportunity to make a difference after reading your magazine religiously. There is nothing worse than paddling into your favourite break and a soggy gross plastic bag wraps around your arm like a vicious blue bottle.”
“Every year all the Stellenbosch residences go on a ‘Jool Toer’ for MGD (Maties Community Service) to raise funds for projects throughout the year. We basically “blik-skud” (collect) for small change at every robot in basically all coastal towns. The tour is a week long and early happens in December.”
One enthusiastic student, doing her bit to keep the beach clean.
“I am part of Meerhoff’s House Committee, a medical residence on Tygerberg Medical campus, and we basically planned to do a beach clean up in Stilbaai. So with a group of about 30 people, we patrolled the beaches for litter in the pouring rain. We made sure we left the beach spotless. The ocean takes care of my surfing needs, so I have to take care of her!” – Jaco Roodt
