If you’re taking a stroll along the Durban Beachfront promenade on May 11th and 12th you’d be forgiven for thinking a couple of fourballs had strayed off the local links and lost their way in the biggest bunker they’d ever seen.
They’re not desperate golfers looking for their errant drives but a bunch of surfers dressed to match the theme of Volcom’s “Get in the Hole!” VQS contest. The Volcom Qualifying Series puts as much emphasis on having fun as it does on winning heats and will take over Dairy Beach next month looking to show pros and amateurs from around the country a good time on the back nine.

The South African winner of the VQS could be surfing this, as the winner gets to surf in the global final during the Volcom Fiji Pro.
The VQS, as it’s more commonly known, is a global contest series known for hijinks and mayhem mixing seamlessly with world-class surfing. The competitors like to mess around but they’re also looking for the sweet taste of victory. The winner in the Pro Am division will book a slot in the VQS world championships later this year, going up against surfers from as far afield as Europe, the Americas, Tahiti, Brazil, Japan and Australia. The VQS World Champs take place in Fiji, during the Volcom Fiji Pro WCT event.
While only one South African will surf his way to a trip overseas, everyone who shows up will get to party. Volcom are providing plenty of snacks and drinks for competitors and there will be golf themed challenges on the beach. Break out the plus fours, practice your backswing and take a walk down to one of the weirdest sports mash ups you can imagine.
