Umhlanga’s Lizzard Summer Surf Event Attracts Top Sponsors

The Annual Umhlanga Lizzard Summer Surf Event will open the 2012 Umhlanga Summer Carnival that takes place on 8/9 December at Umhlanga’s Main Beach.

Varsity College have recently joined forces and are offering a R20 000 bursary for the winner of the U20 Pro Junior Boys division. They will also be sponsoring R5000 cash to the Masters Men (35+) division.

Carole Adam of Varsity College is delighted to be a involved with the Umhlanga Lizzard Summer Surf and said, “We are so proud to be associated with this event hosted at Umhlanga, because it fits perfectly into Varsity College’s ‘Sports Life’ initiative, which is about encouraging students to participate in a healthy sports orientated lifestyle, while keeping a balance with their studies. We launched our Surfing Club in 2011 and our ladies’ Durban Club captain Tammy-Lee Smith won the USSA event this year”

Other great prizes on offer at the event include Lizzard’s R10 000 for the Open Men’s winner, Spar KZN’s R5000 for the Open Ladies division, Hurricane Surf, Nixon, Clayton Surfboards, Carve Sunnies, Lipotech and many more will also be sponsoring prizes for competitors and spectators alike.

Zigzag – South Africa’s leading surfing magazine are putting up R1000 for the “Expression Session” where surfers are rewarded for their aerial antics.

Top surfers from around South Africa are flying in to Durban to take part.  These include Cape Town’s Mikey February, Tarryn Chudleigh, Chantal Rautenbach and Jarryd Veldhuis. Eastern Cape surfer Faye Zoetmulder will also be taking part. KZN surfers are all geared up and excited about the event and include Dan Redman, Brandon Jackson, Beyrick de Vries, Chris Leppan, Gavin Roberts, Casey Grant, Allan Johns, Mike Frew and Chris Knutsen to name a few. Girl surfers include Heidi Palmboom, Sarah Baum, Nicole Pallet and other top surfers.

Surfers and spectators will also be treated to lucky draw prizes during the event and need to keep one ear focussed on the announcer who will be calling out lucky numbers and names. It is all about fun and games for the start of the Festive Season…
