Durban’s Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker kicked-off his 2013/14 Big Wave World Tour (BWWT) campaign in the best possible way by winning the Arnette Punta Galea Challenge, which was held in clean 15-18 foot waves at the Basque country’s premier big wave point break.
Twiggy was unbeatable throughout, claiming heat wins in every round on his way to victory in the final – where he locked in a 9.00 and a 9.67 as his scoring rides for a near-perfect heat total of 29.01 (highest score gets doubled in BWWT events).

With the first two events of the 2013/14 BWWT cancelled due to a lack of swell, the victory puts Twiggy firmly on top of the BWWT standings with three events to go – the Body Glove Mavericks Invitational, the Seatka Pro at Nelscott Reef in Oregon, and the Dive ’n Surf Todos Santos event in Mexico.
The victory will also be the perfect preparation for the possible running of the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, which is waiting for 20 foot waves to smash Waimea Bay before it gets called ON.
