Top Class Surfing at Wave Wizards Surf Series Event 1

Wave Wizards Surf Club hosted the first event of their three part series at Umhlanga’s Main beach this past Sunday. The club is celebrating their 30th year since forming in 1984, and the Fun Surf Series is their idea of a good time.

Shane Sykes made the final in both the Under 18 Boys and Open division.

The waves were fun and the action was top-class, with the Open Mens division featuring two surfers within the Top 100 on the world rankings, a 17 year-old young gun who aims to be there soon, and an experienced competitor who often dishes out competitive lessons. Meanwhile, the Open Womens division featured three surfers with National Colours.

WAVE WIZARDS SURF EVENT A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

Beyrick De Vries took top honours at Event 1.

It was a perfect day at Umhlanga’s Main Beach this past Sunday 14 September, as the first event of Wave Wizards Surf Club’s three part series took place. The waves were 1-2ft with the occasional 3-4ft set on the outside, which together with the sunny and windless conditions made for very contestable surf.

Over eighty surfers entered the event and their ages ranged from 5 to 55, with many of the younger competitors encouraging their fathers to also enter and have a fun time on the beach.

Lizzard and Hurricane Surf provided great prizes to all the surfers, and the judges and tabulators were treated to delicious food from Umhlanga Beach’s La Spiaggia restaurant. Surfers and beachgoers were also treated to refreshingly chilled Fuze Iced Tea.

The Open Mens division was won by Beyrick de Vries, while Davey Van Zyl finished runner-up. 17 Year-old Shane Sykes placed third and Dan Redman finished fourth. Beyrick won himself a holiday to Mozambique’s Hotel Phaphalati, which is part of the Elan Property Group. Tyrone Watts, who is marketing manager for the group, was down at the beach to present the main prize.

Chanelle Botha cleaned up in both the Under 18 Girls and Open division. In the Open final there were three surfers with National Colours, so it was tightly contested. Teal Hogg, Chanelle Botha and Nicole Pallet all have their National Colours.

The Girls novice division was very special to watch, as tiny little surfers braved the tough waves in the Umhlanga bowl. The young girls had caddies to help push them onto the wave, and in the end Lily de Goede was crowned champ, while Ella Potterton placed second, Saxon Bird third, Samantha Southwood fourth and Maya de Goede fifth. In the Boys Novice division, young Jordan du Toit beat Taine Bird and they were closely followed by Sergio Noguiera and Indie Van de Wall.

“We could not have wished for a more perfect day down at Umhlanga,” said stoked club chairman, Jestyn Viljoen. “Sunny skies and no wind made it perfect for families to all come down to the beach, and we’ve heard plenty of positive comments from both the surfers and spectators about what a good community day it was. Thanks to everyone involved. The next event is on 19 October.”
