Slade and Sarah Scoop Top Honours at Umhlanga Surf Fest

Slade Prestwich and Sarah Baum grabbed both the U20 and Open titles in their respective divisions at this past weekend’s Umhlanga Surf Fest sponsored by Lizzard and Nature Valley.

Held in tough, but contestable three foot waves at Umhlanga’s Main Beach, the event featured contestants all the way from the Under 12 division, right through to a Masters division – that saw well respected rippers like Paul Canning, Frankie Oberholzer, Carl Roux and Gary van Wierengen dueling it out for the title.

UMHLANGA LIZZARD NATURE VALLEY SURF FEST GREAT SUCCESS

The Umhlanga Lizzard Nature Valley Surf Fest was held at Umhlanga’s Main Beach on 7/8 December 2013. This event opens up the 2013 Umhlanga Summer Carnival Festivities. Held in 2-3 foot contestable waves with slight North Easterly winds – surfers were able to really turn on their performances and win the many prizes on offer.

Standout performer on the day was Sarah Baum who got first in both the U20 Girls and the Open Ladies divisions. Sarah won R2500 cash from Nature Valley, R1000 from Hurricane for the standout surfer on the day, plus a holiday in Mozambique valued at R5000 from the Mets Family. Another standout surfer was Slade Prestwich, who won R5000 from Lizzard for the open mens division, and a R20 000 bursary from Varsity College for winning the U20 boys division. Plus Slade won the R1000 from Nature Valley for the paddle battle.

Other winners on the day were Gaby Lailvaux who won both the U12 girls and the U14 girls divisions. Gaby also shared the Bells R2500 cash prize with Teal Hogg for ‘best wave score of an U16 girl’. The U16 girls division saw Chanelle Botha in first place.

In the U12 boys division Karl Steen got top honours, and Calvin Goor won the 14 boys.  Salt Rock top surfer Shane Sykes placed first in the U16 boys winning R2500 cash. In the Masters Men first place went to Paul Canning who used to represent South Africa on the WCT. Paul won himself R2500 cash from Varsity College.

Special awards went to Sean Ruggeri who won a custom made CLAYTON surfboard valued at R3500, and Teal Hogg who won the Eco R1000 for the girls paddle battle. Josh Smit won the R1000 from ZIGZAG for doing a massive ‘superman aerial’. All finalists received wonderful prizes from Lizzard and Lizzy, Hurricane Surf, Rudy’s Ding Repair Kit, Nature Valley, and judges were treated to delicious pizzas from the Pizza Boys.

Gavin Roberts – Marketing manager for Lizzard “Umhlanga delivered superbly yet again. Despite the lack of sunshine, the waves were contestable, and surfers all got a good weekend of fun and waves. Plus they were all treated to free Granola Bars and Haagen Dazs Icecream! Big thanks to Paul Izzard from KZN Surfing and his team for putting it all together so well’.
