SA Champs Kick-Off Under Grey Skies

SA_Champs_New

Imagine waking up to this weather after a year-long slumber?

Well, that’s exactly what greeted competitors from the eight provincial teams contesting the 2013 Cool Shoe South African Surfing Champs at New Pier, Durban. The Western Province team no doubt felt right at home.

Things did eventually get cosy down at the beachfront once the majority of competitors and the fistful of spectators had huddled together for shelter from the sporadic rain – Behind them a vacant building with big glass windows overlooking the lineup completed the scene.

Surfers secretly love this weather though. We smile and wave while skipping past a pedestrian who’s sheltering their head with a dripping newspaper. You’re off to go surf, while they’re looking to run and hide.

So with a spring in their step it didn’t take long for reigning champs, could-be champs, and maybe-should-be-champs, to get things warmed-up once the heats started rolling out of bed.

And it’s just going to get better, with both the swell and the weather predicted to improve.

Go check out 96 of the country’s raddest surfers battling it out for individual and team glory at the 2013 Cool Shoe SA Surfing Champs at New Pier, between 27 – 30 June.
