Rio Commences – Billabong Rio Pro (Day 1)

Felipe Toledo, Gabriel Medina and Josh Kerr were the standouts on Day 1 of the Billabong Rio Pro at Barra Da Tijuca. Jordy Smith also looked in top-form during his opening heat against fellow South African, Travis Logie, and Hawaii’s Fred Pattachia.

One of the biggest surfers on tour, but one of the lightest on his feet – Jordy Smith was looking sharp.

The defending Rio champ grabbed his two highest scoring rides going both left and right, which showed he is equally capable frontside and backhand. Competitors will be wary and look to not give him an inch. There were no arms-outstretched claims just yet, but Jordy looked totally comfortable while edging out Fred and Travis to skip straight to Round 3. Travis meanwhile will be up against Owen Wright in Round 2.

Surfing in front of his home crowd, Felipe Toledo grabbed the highest heat total of the day.

The judges were definitely favouring airs in the punchy beachbreak peaks, evidenced by Felipe Toledo’s 18.30 heat total for what were essentially two moves. A fully-rotated frontside and backside air on separate waves netted the Brazilian a 9.43 and an 8.87 in front of his stoked home crowd.

Nikki Van Dyk slammed some big turns on her way to victory in Heat 1.

Womens Round 1 kicked-off directly after Mens Heat 12, with Bianca Buitendag, Nikki Van Dijk and Coco Ho battling it out in the opening heat. It proved to be the most intense match-up of the round as all three competitors grabbed a combined score that have won any other heat of the Round. In the end, Nikki edged to victory over Bianca and Coco Ho respectively. Bianca will now face Tatiana Weston-Webb when the Rio Womens Pro gets back underway.
