Not a single wave was ridden in anger today at the Volcom Fiji Pro. That’s because a lay day was called and everyone was enjoying a relaxing day on the islands of Namotu and Tavarua. No stress.
A couple of waves may have been ridden in frustration by Adriano, though, because he is most probably kicking himself for letting his world title lead slip so easily, the fiesty competitor that he is.
According to the official Surfline forecast, the swell is expected to ease through until the next pulse gets felt on Sunday afternoon (Fiji time), but they also forecast a few leftovers from the current swell on Saturday morning, so organisers may choose to run a few heats to get them out of the way in anticipation of holding the final rounds in pumping surf.

DETERIORATING CONDITIONS FORCE LAY DAY FOR VOLCOM FIJI PRO

RESTAURANTS, Tavarua/Fiji (Friday, June 7, 2013) – After calling Volcom Fiji Pro competition on this morning, unexpected onshore winds and quickly deteriorating conditions have forced event officials to call competition off after a three-hour holding period.
Stop No. 4 of 10 on the ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the Volcom Fiji Pro enjoyed an unforgettable day of perfect waves at Restaurants yesterday, completing Round 2 and the opening heats of Round 3. Event organizers returned to similar conditions this morning, originally calling competition on. Unfortunately, the quality of surf would take a turn for the worse and following a three-hour hold, competition has been called off for today.
“At first call this morning, we had excellent surf at restaurants, but conditions changed quickly,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge said. “The winds turned around, making things pretty messy and while we went on hold in hopes of improved conditions, mother nature has not changed in our favor. We’ve called competition off for today and will return tomorrow morning for another call.”
Up first will be Jeremy Flores (FRA), 25, against Miguel Pupo (BRA), 21, in Heat 4 Round 3 when Volcom Fiji Pro competition resumes.
