Sunset Surf Club will be hosting their seventh annual Night Surfing Classic on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 December at PE’s Pollock Beach.
Once the sun goes down the heats will be on.
Like most club surfing events the aim of the game is to have fun, and the Night Surfing Classic offers plenty of that in the form of live music performances by The Brothers and Napalma alongside the surfing action. There will also be a beach fashion show and a skate-off competition over the two nights, so there will be plenty to keep the expected crowds entertained.

SUNSET SURF CLUB NIGHT SURFING CLASSIC THE 7th EDITION
THE PIPE, POLLOCK BEACH, PORT ELIZABETH 5 & 6 DECEMBER 2014
The annual Sunset Surf Club Night Surfing Classic proudly sponsored by Algoa FM will be held on the 5th & 6th December this year once again starting off the 2014 Nelson Mandela Bay Summer Season.
The unique night surfing event catering for the whole family comprising three disciplines this year will once again be hosted by the oldest existing club in the country, Sunset Surf Club.
Sunset Surf Club Night Surfing Classic will be returning to the Pipe, Pollock Beach, Port Elizabeth for its seventh year and although the club failed to secure its regular sponsorship from Surfing South Africa and Sport and Recreation South Africa this year, organisers are confident the event will take place.
Thus far the club received valuable support from Algoa FM once again for media and advertising sponsorship, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for the temporary floodlights and product sponsorships from Quiksilver, Roxy, Surf Centre, Soul Good, La Zila Projects and EPSC.
The night surfing promises to give surfers and families in Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas an experience that they will remember for a very long time. Where else would surfers and spectators alike experience surfing at night and sometimes until midnight under the glow of special flood lights on the beach sponsored by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.
When the sun sets on Pollock Beach on Friday 5th December 2014, a group of enthusiastic surfers will be suiting up and diving into the dark, moonlit waves. They will continue to battle it out through the waves during dusk and into the night, finishing at midnight on Friday and at 22h30 on Saturday night after which the awards ceremony will be held.
The Brothers always put on a great show.
This year’s contest promises to be a spectacular sight, with a whole host of beach activities for all ages, including live music by The Brothers and Brazilian band, Napalma, a local dance group, a beach fashion show and a skate off competition over the two nights.
For the safety of the competitors, lifesavers from Hobie Beach Lifesaving Club will patrol the waters throughout the contest on watercraft and shark prods will be secured to bouys behind the breaking waves as a safety precaution.
The age groups are: Under 10 and 12 Boys and Girls; Under 14 and 16 Boys and Girls; Under 18 Girls: Under 20 Boys; Open Ladies and Men; Seniors; Masters; Veterans, Long Board and Boogieboard including a Paddle Battle – Under 12 boys and girls and Under 16 boys and girls.
This year the club is looking forward to participation of three out of town clubs, surf school run by international surf judge, Cyril Mqadi who recruits street children, in Durban, Jeffrey’s Bay surfers from Pelsrus and Nine Miles Project run by Nigel Savel from Cape Town. For many of the participants, this is the only event in the country giving them an opportunity to surf at night under floodlights.
The “Learn to Surf” session for beginners will be held on Saturday 6th December from 11h00 – 13h00 there will be instructors and coaches available providing free surf lessons to youngsters interested in trying the sport, with top surfers offering words of advice and vital tips. Surfboards and wetsuits will be provided to all by Sunset Surf Club.
There are still various sponsorship opportunities for individuals and businesses available.
