You’ve heard it before and will no doubt hear it a hundred times during the webcast – Trestles is one of the world’s most rippable waves. It’s hard to argue considering the performances over the years. Kelly Slater himself announced his intentions to the world back in 1990 with a breakout win at the Body Glove Surf Bout. And who could forget Dane Reynolds shredding all the way to the Final in 2009 on his original Dumpster Diver, when he was reported to have been on a drip between heats to top-up on energy?
Kelly Slater has been winning at Trestles since 1990.
That’s what makes the Hurley Pro at Trestles so darn exciting. There’s not going to be a highlight reel full of sick tubes like witnessed at Chopes just two weeks back, but we’re going to be see exactly where the world’s best are at when it comes down to straight-out shredding in waves similar to what we ride on a regular basis.
This year the Top 17 Women will also join in the fun at Trestles at the Swatch Women’s Pro.
Gabriel Medina currently leads the world rankings by 7 800 points ahead of Kelly Slater, with the 11-time world champ yet to register an event win this season. Kelly is a six-time Trestles champ and it’s hard to remember a season in which he didn’t register an event win, so our money is on KS to take the title at Trestles. Although it’s very hard to bet against Gabriel Medina’s current form, or the small wave mastery of his compatriot, Felipe Toledo, who took out the recent win at the Vans US Open with an impressive aerial display.
On the Women’s rankings it’s a lot tighter at the top with just 3 900 points separating first (Carissa Moore) and third (Tyler Wright), so it is going to be an interesting battle for supremacy there. From our completely un-biased opinion ;), Bianca Buitendag has the sickest style on tour, which should suit the perfect peaks of Trestles. Either way the Vic Bay local has been out there practicing and getting the lineup sussed from all angles. Here’s Bianca getting the front row perspective of @JordySmith88 testing his boards ahead of the event.
The waiting period for the Hurley Pro at Trestles and Swatch Women’s Pro kick-off tomorrow (Tuesday, 9 September) and the forecast is calling for the following:
The first few days of the event waiting period will see a very fun, rippable mix of Southern Hemisphere SSW swells. For Tuesday and into Wednesday morning the 9th-10th, it will be primarily fading swell leftover from this weekend. By Wednesday afternoon we’ll see a new pulse of SSW swell slowly fill in that will be strongest later Thursday and Friday. The largest day of surf in the next few will be Tuesday; then down a bit Wednesday and into early Thursday; pulsing back up a bit later Thursday and into Friday.
Trestles is one of the most consistent waves in California though, so expect for the event to kick-off sooner rather than later. Log on to www.aspworldtour.com to watch it LIVE.
