Over 100 surfers from all parts of the country will be in East London this long weekend competing in the 2A Rated Surfing South Africa Nahoon Junior Open presented by Twizza. Scheduled to get under way at 8am on Saturday at Nahoon Beach, the contest caters for boys and girls in the U10, U12, U14,U16 and U18 Divisions and offers points on the Surfing South Africa PST ratings as well as R15000 in prize money.

The second annual East London event is hosted by Buffalo City Surfriders and forms part of Surfing South Africa’s commitment to hold eight youth tournaments at different venues around South Africa in 2016. It is the third in the 2016 Surfing South Africa Gromcomp series and follows the Durban Gromcomp in February and the PE Gromcomp in March.

With over 100 surfers involved this weekend contest officials will have their work cut out for them as it will take 22 hours to complete the 65 heats. Luckily they have three days to run the heats but strong winds and high seas might make things tricky for officials and surfers on Saturday.

The proceedings will get underway with an Opening Function at the Nahoon Lifesaving Club at 6.30pm on Friday. Refreshments will be available and the Buffalo City Surfriders will be selling boerewors rolls for R10 to raise funds. All participants, officials as well as parents and supporters are welcome.

The competitive U18 and Under 16 Divisions have attracted a solid entry but Surfing South Africa will be pleased with the strong entry in both the U12 and U10 divisions and surfers will have to fight hard to reach the Finals in the eight divisions. These finals will be held on Monday May 2.
