The first four quarter finalists were decided at tricky Bells Beach on Day 6 of the Rip Curl Pro waiting period.
Jordy has ripped his way to the quarter finals of the Rip Curl Pro.
Jordy Smith, Adriano De Souza (BRA), Owen Wright (AUS) and Filipe Toledo (BRA) have all booked their spot in the last eight by taking out their respective Round 4 heats. Jordy relegated one of the event favourites, Mick Fanning (AUS), to Round 5 with a strong display in Heat 3 of Round 4, while Adriano got the better of Kelly Slater (USA) in Heat 1 to send the 11-time world champ and Josh Kerr (AUS) to Round 5.
Owen Wright (AUS) was the low seed in Heat 2 against Joel Parkinson (AUS) and reigning world champ, Gabriel Medina (BRA), but showed his class to take the heat win and book his spot in the quarter finals. Surfing in the last heat of the day, Filipe Toledo (BRA) sneaked a late win against Jeremy Flores (FRA) and fellow countryman, Jadson Andre.

The Brazilian starred in Round 3 earlier in the day, throwing down multiple airs to score the event’s highest heat total so far – 18.57 – including an even 9.00 and a sick 9.57. The current world ratings leader started the Rip Curl Pro with a hiccup in Round 1, but has stepped his game up and looked solid in his following three heats. With his spot in the quarter-finals already decided, it looks like Australia has been kind to the 19 year-old shredder.
Stephanie Gilmore was in top form during Round 3 of the Rip Curl Women’s Pro.
The Rip Curl Women’s Pro completed Round 3 yesterday on Day 5 of the waiting period, and Bianca Buitendag couldn’t build on the momentum she gained with a good heat win in Round 1. In fun conditions out at Bells, Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) got off to a cracking start to Heat 3, which put Bianca and Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW) on the ropes shortly after the hooter. Steph then backed up her 8.67 with a 9.70 halfway through the match-up to put her opponents in a combination situation they couldn’t find an answer to. In the heat before, Carissa Moore (HAW) took a little longer to get going (5 minutes), but her 8.83 put her in a commanding position over Joanne Defay (FRA) and former Bells winner, Silvana Lima (BRA). Carissa backed up her solid opener with a 9.67 to pick up the day’s highest heat total – 18.50 – and booked her spot in the quarter finals.
Another former Bells winner, Sally Fitzgibbens (AUS), and Hawaii’s Coco Ho also secured their spot in the last eight by winning their respective Round 3 heats.
Bianca faces a tough heat against Tyler Wright in Round 4.
Jordy’s opponent in the quarter finals is yet to be decided, with Round 5 next up for the Men’s to decide the remaining quarter-finalists. Bianca Buitendag, meanwhile, will have to beat 2014 world title runner-up, Tyler Wright (AUS), in Round 4 to secure a spot in the last eight.
