Jordy and Tanika Win at WP Champs

The Western Province Champs were held in fun head high waves at Long Beach this past weekend (6/7 December), bringing a busy 2014 season to a ripping end.

Jordy Maree ended his season on a high with a win at the WP Champs.

More than a hundred competitors took to the cold waters of Kommetjie to compete across sixteen divisions, with Jordy Maree and Tanika Hoffman taking top honours by winning the Open Men’s and Women’s titles respectively.

SUCCESSFUL 2014 BILLABONG WESTERN PROVINCE SURFING CHAMPS BRINGS LOCAL CONTEST SEASON TO A CLOSE

Long Beach produced good surf for both days of the 48th edition of the Billabong Western Province Surfing Championships over the weekend, bringing the local contest season to a fitting close.

Jordy Maree clinched the Open title at Long Beach.

Over 100 surfers competed for provincial titles across 16 divisions with Jordy Maree of Kalk Bay and Tanika Hoffman of Hout Bay winning the prestigious Men’s and Women’s titles respectively. Maree also won the Under 17 Division and a second Western Province Championship gold medal, while Hoffman was named the Western Province Women’s Surfer of the Year for the second time in a row.

Tanika Hoffman took top honours in the Open Women’s division.

Both Maree and Hoffman represented South Africa during 2014. Maree was a member of the South African Junior Team that competed in the ISA World Junior Championships in Ecuador and Hoffman surfed for South Africa at the ISA World Surfing Games in Peru, as well as in the ISA China Cup where she won a silver medal. Max Armstrong of Scarborough was named Surfer of the Contest.

The youngest Western Province Champion was Alex Townsend of Kommetjie who won the Under 11 title, while the oldest surfer to win a Western Province Championship medal was Hans Kamhoot in the Over 55 Veterans Division.

Max Elkington of Hout Bay capped a successful 2014 with victory in the Under 13 Boys Division, and Julia Ploughman of Scarborough took honours in the Under 13 Girls Final. Ford Van Jaarsveldt of Kommetjie is the Under 15 Boys Champion for 2014, and Sarah Ingram of Constantia ended her year in style with victory in the Under 15 Girls Division.

Ruth Armstrong of Scarborough added another Western Province Championship gold medal to the many won by the Armstrong family over the years when she became the WP Champion in the Under 17 Girls Division while a stoked Jarred Veldhuis of Kommetjie celebrated his return to Western Province with victory in the U20 Boys Division.

Ethan Pentz ripped to make the Final in the Under 20 division.

Sea Point residents Shane Thorne and Carolyn Dent won the Over 30 Senior Men and Senior Women division titles respectively. Dave Mommsen won the Masters gold medal, Steve Gadd took honours in the Grandmasters Division, while Dealtry Pickford won the Grand Kahuna Division.

Special Awards were presented to Michael February (Surfer of the Year), Tanika Hoffman (Women Surfer of the Year), Max Elkington (Junior Surfer of the Year), Neil Zietsman (Masters Surfer of the Year), Nina Woermann (Sportsperson of the Year), Eddie Wichmann (Kirk Cottrell Trophy for services to WP Surfing), Barbara Johnson (Friendship Trophy), Craig Johnson (Coach of the Year), Mandla Ndlovu (Judge of the Year), Kari Pigden (Administrators Shield) and Alan van Gysen (Media Award). Western Province and South African Big Wave surfer Chris Bertish was presented with the Achievement Award.
