Jeffreys Bay surfer Angelo Faulkner steals the show at the Nahoon Junior Open in East London




Angelo Faulkner wins both the U18 and U16 Boys Divisions at the Nahoon Junior Open presented by Twizza in East London

Monday, May 2nd, Nahoon Beach, East London: Jeffreys Bay surfer Angelo Faulkner stole the show at the 2A PST rated Nahoon Junior Open presented by Twizza when he won both the Under 18 and Under 16 Boys titles at the event. The former Under 15 South African Champion made good use of the 3-4 foot Nahoon Beach surf in his back to back victories.

In the competitive Under 16 final Faulkner beat current South African Under 15 Champion Max Elkington of Kommetjie into second place with fellow JBay local Arnold Vermaak taking third ahead of East London surfer Daniel Emslie.

He followed this win with a giant killing act in the Under 18 Final where he beat division top seed Jake Elkington of Kommetjie into second place. Third was Ethan Fletcher with fellow Kommetjie surfer Ford Van Jaarsveldt taking fourth spot.

New Zealand based Kai Woolf took the honours ahead of Sophie Bell of Umdloti in the Under 18 Girls Final. South African Under 15 Champion Kirsty McGillivray of Jeffreys Bay was third and Olivia Izzard of La Lucia.

Woolf also reached the Under 16 Girls Final but had to settle for third place behind winner Sophie Bell and second placed Olivia Izzard, two of the girls she beat in the Under 18 Final. Julia Plougman of Scarborough was fourth in this division.

In the Under 14 Boys Division East London local Mitch du Preez secured victory over second placed Travis Pearce of Cape Town while Aya Gericke’s long journey from Herolds Bay paid off when he took third place here ahead of Nathan Spalding of Durban.

Talented Kayla Nogueira of Umhlanga beat Summer Sutton of Kommetjie to win gold in the Under 14 Girls Final with Zoe Steyn of East London third and Gabi Lailvaux of Westbrook taking fourth.

Daniel Emslie of East London continued his domination of the Under 12 Division with another strong win ahead of Christian Venter of Melkbosstrand and fellow East London surfers Matt O Brien and Ethan Currin who came third and fourth respectively. In the youngest Division, the Under 10’s, Nate Colby of Durban edged out a trio of East London surfers to take the win. Joel Fowles was second, David Emslie third and Josh Malherbe came fourth.

Over 100 surfers from all parts of the country competed in this Surfing South Africa Nahoon Junior event and a spokesman for Buffalo City Boardriders confirmed that the Nahoon Junior Open presented by Twizza will be upgraded to at least a 3A rated contest next year and take place over the same Workers Day long weekend.

The Nahoon Junior Open was supported by Surfing South Africa, the Buffalo City Surfriders and the National Lotteries Commission with Twizza the presenting sponsor of the event.
