Sarah Baum took out the Durban leg of the SSA Womens Pro.
Tanika Hoffman & Sarah Baum win two divisions in the second Women’s Pro in Cape Town & Durban respectively & Faye Zoetmulder makes a return in Jeffrey’s Bay after a injury induced layoff.
The second edition of Surfing South Africa’s Women’s took place at Long Beach Kommetjie, Kitchen Windows in Jeffrey’s Bay and Dairy Beach in Durban yesterday (Sunday November 25th) and over 60 girls of all ages turned out to participate in the three exclusive events for women surfers.
Tanika Hoffman (Clifton) and Sarah Baum (Athlone Park) duplicated their first event results when they won both the Open Division and the Pro Junior finals at Long Beach and Dairy Beach respectively.
Both earned R2000 for their efforts while Faye Zoetmulder (Port Elizabeth) will be happy that she could celebrate her return to competitive surfing with a victory and a R1000 cheque in the Open Final in J Bay.
In the Kommetjie event the prize money was boosted by a generous sponsorship of R2000 cash courtesy of Liquid Blast energy drink, all the contestants and the finalists received product courtesy of Island Tribe sun block while the division winners took home Island Tribe hampers for their efforts.
Of the R2000 put up for grabs by Liquid Blast, Hoffman secured R1000 for achieving the highest heat score in the Open division and highest heat score in the Pro Junior Division. She also took home R500 in cash as the Surfer of the Contest.
In a gesture to legendary South African coach Graham Hynes, who lost his house and possessions in the tragic St Francis fire just on three weeks ago, Hoffman donated R500 of her winnings to the fund set up by Surfing South Africa to support Graham Hynes.
At Kitchen Windows in Jeffrey’s Bay, Faye Zoetmulder’s successful return to contest surfing after a 10 month layoff due to a badly broken leg will be welcomed by both EP Surfing and Surfing South Africa. Zoetmulder was about to join the ASP World Qualifying Series 10 months ago when the accident occurred and it has had to endure numerous operations and setbacks in her rehabilitation process.
Tanika did enough to claim the Cape Town event despite the stormy conditions.
At Long Beach in Kommetjie tough 6 foot surf and difficult conditions did not deter the contestants in any of the divisions. In the Open final Tarryn Chudleigh (Kommetjie) came second to Hoffman with Roxy Davis (Fish Hoek) taking third and Tasha Mentasti (Cape Town) ending fourth.
In the Pro Junior Final Holly Armstrong (Scarborough) came second behind Hoffman with Danielle Johnson (Muizenberg) third and Nina Woerman (Kenilworth) fourth.
Anoush Zakarian (Melkbosstrand), the winner of the U16 division in the first Women’s Day Pro made it a double and won R500 courtesy Liquid Blast energy drink for the highest heat score in this division. Cara Stubbs (Marina Da Gama) came second, Kelly Williams (Bishopscourt) was third and Samantha Sutton (Constantia) came fourth.
Samantha Sutton also went home with a unique Diva watch as the winner of the lucky draw.
Strong winds made condition tough at Kitchen Windows in Jeffrey’s Bay where Emma Smith (Jeffrey’s Bay) came second to Faye Zoetmulder in the Open Final. Emma’s sister Gina was third and Margreet Wibbelink (Jeffrey’s Bay) reached her first final and placed fourth.
Emma Smith won the Pro Junior Final with fellow J Bay surfer Tahra Uren taking second place ahead of Gina Smith and Britney Linder (Port Elizabeth), who were third and fourth respectively.
Talented 13 year old Kai Woolf ( Jeffrey’s Bay) won the Under 16 Final beating Uren into second and Linder into third place. Lara Odendaal (Port Elizabeth) placed fourth. In addition to her R1000 prize money Woolf won the Diva watch in the lucky draw.
Diminutive Kirsty McGillivray (Port Elizabeth) beat Jade Vaughan (Port Elizabeth) and Grietjie Burger (Jeffrey’s Bay) into second and third place respectively in the Rookies Final.
Cold Durban weather but good 3 foot surf was the order of the day at Dairy Beach where legendary surfer Heather Clark (Port Shepstone) had to be happy with her second place behind Sarah Baum in the Open division. Heidi Palmboom (Bluff) was third and Nicole Pallet (La Lucia) came forth in this division.
Pallet showed that she is reaching her best form when she posted a runner up spot behind Baum in the Pro Junior Final. Palmboom took third place and Chanelle Botha (Warner Beach) was fourth.
Botha beat Teal Hogg (Umhlanga Rocks) into second place in the Under 16 Final while Naledi Kekana (Glenwood) was third and Cana Foster (Umdloti) finished in fourth place.
The Rookie title was won by Kelly Medley (Umdloti) with Gabi Lailvaux (Westbrook) taking second ahead of third placed Courtney Sim (Gillitts). Amber Van Wyk (Dbn North) was fourth and Janine Finnegan (Umhlanga) came fifth.
