Juniors Amped for 50th Billabong Jnr Series Event

Cape Town’s Long Beach is currently swarming with Junior rippers, who’ve bundled into town to contest the second stop of the 2014 Billabong Junior Series. This weekend’s event is the 50th Billabong have hosted in their 17 year history of running the Series and, like always, will feature the country’s brightest young talents.

The event starts tomorrow (Friday, 8 August) and runs through to Sunday, when the Finals will take place. There’s serious prize money up for grabs in all the divisions – plus series points to fight for – so we are certain that the Juniors will be smashing it hard.

50th BILLABONG JUNIOR SERIES EVENT PRESENTED BY BOS – All The Info

What: The Billabong Junior Series has been running in South Africa for 17 years and over that time has handed out over R1million Rand in prizemoney to junior surfers in the country. This event is the second in a three-part national series that started in Mossel Bay and will culminate in Cape St Francis in October. This event is also the 50th Billabong Junior Series event to take place, a giant milestone for the sport of surfing, and in particular junior surfing, in South Africa. The continued success of the Billabong Junior Series is part of Billabong’s legacy to the sport.

When: The event is a three-day event,  set to take place this weekend 8 – 10 August. The opening function will take place on the evening of Thursday 7 August at Fishermans Restaurant in Kommetjie at 18h30.

Where: The event venue is Long Beach in Cape Town.The venue offers a left and a right-breaking wave, with the occasional tube ride on the inside. it is an ideal venue for the junior surfers, and the forecast is showing small but fun waves, warm weather, and after a bit of a south-easterly blow there will be light winds towards the end of the weekend.

Emma Smith will be leading the charge in the U20 Girls Pro Junior Division.

Who: The best junior surfers in the country will be present, from the U12 Boys division, all the way to the premier U20 Boys and U20 Girls Pro Junior division. Girls in the U20 Pro Junior division include the likes of Emma and Gina Smith, Teal Hogg, Chanelle Botha and Jade Mets, while the U20 Boys Division includes Diran Zakarian, Joshua Smit, Shane Sykes, Slade Prestwich and Steffan Burrows. “It is fantastic to see the growth of Pro Junior surfing in South Africa over the last year,” said ASP Africa’s Colin Fitch. “The fact that we had Dylan Lightfoot who is still a Pro Junior in the JBay WCT event was big motivation for our junior surfers in this region. The level of Pro Junior women’s surfing growing at a fast rate. It is very pleasing that we have 15 girls in the Pro Junior division in this event.”

Why: The 50th Billabong Junior Series event presented by BOS is loaded with cash prizes, points, and product prizes. There are prizes for the finalists in each division, and there is also a number of specialty prizes and awards. These include BOS product, a Nixon Winner Takes All watch, DaKine product prizes, KR Fins, and 2 custom-shaped Dennis Ellis surfboards. There is also a full tray of 12 VonZipper sunnies, Playstation prizes, Samsung product giveaways , Nixon Blasters and more.
