Expectations High for 2014 Billabong Pro Tahiti

Teahupo’o has been cranking in the lead-up to the Billabong Pro Tahiti, which gets underway today (Friday, 15 August). The fearsome left-hander has already claimed some flesh and blood, when Kevin Bourez (Michel’s brother) head-butted the reef during the Trials, so we’re hoping that there’s going to be nothing but charging for the rest of the event.

Jordy has been getting himself re-acquainted with Chopes this week.

There’s going to be no choice other than to charge for competitors wanting to win their heats at Teahupo’o. Not only is it that kind of wave, but a swell of serious proportions is bearing down on Tahiti. The official forecast by Surfline predicts double to triple overhead sets on Monday, with the rest of the waiting period looking really good at this point.

So whether they will get Round 1 underway on Friday, or if they’ll wait for Monday’s predicted madness remains to be seen. Either way there’s going to be some gnarly barrels ridden like is usually the case at Chopes.

And we’re going to make sure we watch it all LIVE on aspworldtour.com to see which of the Dream Tour chargers are made of stern stuff. Travis Logie we know is going to be up for it. His gutsy semi-final finish in the 2011 Billabong Pro Tahiti was just the kind of performance we expect to see at Teahupo’o.

Travis is a gutsy competitor. He charged hard and paid the price for his third place in 2011.

Wipeout

Winning heats can be painful.

Travis needs another good result here or I fear he will not make the WCT next year. Pity the reef scratchies above are from Fiji and not Tahiti, suppose both places end with “ï” ekse
