Four of South Africa’s Qualifying Series campaigners have been in action at the QS6000-rated Red Nose Pro15 Florianópolis SC in Brazil, and despite a decent start just one remains in contention.
Grey weather but contestable waves have been on offer in Florianopolis.
Mikey February was the first of the Saffas to take to the water in Round 1, but found the going tough in Heat 3 and only managed a 9.30 heat total to finish in fourth and fall out of the event.
In Heat 7, meanwhile, Dylan Lightfoot took a convincing win over Kiron Jabour (HAW) in second, while Caina Barletta (BRA) and Jorgann Couzinet (REU) were eliminated from the event. Dylan racked up a solid 15.03 heat total to finish 2.26pts ahead of his closest competitor.
Dale Staples was up next in Round 1 Heat 11, and he put together two good scores – an 8.17 and a 6.50 for a 14.67 heat total – to finish in first ahead of Cody Robinson (AUS), while Jatyr Berasaluce (EUK) and Tomas Fernandes (PRT) dropped out of the draw.

Seeded directly into Round 2, Umhlanga’s Beyrick De Vries then narrowly missed advancing from Heat 2, when he finished just 0.40pts behind Nathan Hedge (AUS), who advanced in second. The heat was won by France’s Nomme Mignot.
In Round 2 Heat 7, meanwhile, Dylan Lightfoot once again put together two good scores to advance in second place behind former Dream Tour surfer, Nathan Yeomans (USA).
Dale Staples was the last Saffa to surf on Day 2, and he was unlucky to finish fourth in Heat 11, which saw Santiago Muniz (ARG) and Conner Coffin (USA) advance to the next round in first and second respectively.
Dylan’s new boards are obviously working.
This leaves J-Bay’s Dylan Lightfoot as the last remaining South African in the event, and he’ll be hoping to keep the momentum going in Round 3 Heat 3, which will see him face Davey Cathels (AUS), Hiroto Ohhara (JPN) and Ian Gouveia (BRA).
