Disappointing Cloudbreak on Day 1 of Fiji Pro

When we dream of Fiji it’s of waves so perfect they look like they’ve been painted by an artist, so when Cloudbreak wonkily appeared on the webcast as Round 1 of the Fiji Women’s Pro hit the water, it was a little disappointing. With the memories of the madness of the 2012 Volcom Fiji Pro swirling in our brain, we were expecting the most.

Barrel
This is not a painting, it’s Dave Wassel on an incredible wave at Cloudbreak at the 2012 Fiji Pro.

Although blemished by the cross-shore wind, Cloudbreak was still offering very contestable surf and it was important to get Round 1 out of the way with only three days remaining in the short waiting period.

Hawaiians Malia Manuel, Carissa Moore and Alessa Quizon showed their comfort in powerful reef surf by racking up the three highest heat totals of Day 1 to advance to Round 3.

CArissa
Ratings leader, Carissa Moore, advanced directly to Round 3 with a solid Round 1 performance.

Also putting together solid heat totals were Tyler Wright (AUS) and Vic Bay local, Bianca Buitendag. Unfortunately Bianca’s two good scores came in the same Round 1 heat that Malia Manuel was dominating, so she had to surf once more later in the day.

She did manage to carve this sick gouge though, which would have helped build confidence on what is her first event at Cloudbreak.

Bianca then surfed a low-scoring heat with Alana Blanchard (HAW) in Round 2. By that stage the cross-shore wind had intensified and made picking the good ones a difficult task. Still, the Southern Cape local found the scores needed to advance and will surf again in Round 3. She will be up against 5-time world champ, Steph Gilmore, and Tatiana Weston-Webb in the first heat when competition resumes at the Fiji Women’s Pro.

I see Bianca in round 3 draws that hawain brazzo chick Tatiana who faked going right and pulled the interference card in Rio.

Time to smoke her and happy Gilmore Bianca !!!!!

I’ve read that the above barrel (Dave Wassel) happened within five minutes; between paddling out and cracking a beer in the channel afterward with dry hair. I’ve also read that Elvis is alive and well, just chilling low profile on K2 with a herd of Yetis.
