Dan Redman wins 2012 Guido’s SA Open of Surfing in Port Alfred

Dan Redman’s trusty backhand steered him to victory in Port Alfred this weekend.

Dan Redman (Durban) won the 2012 Guido’s SA Open of Surfing in good surf and fine weather at Port Alfred on Saturday (15 December). Redman, the runner up in the event in 2011, scored a heat total of 16.25 points and edged Shaun Joubert (Mossel Bay) into second. Joubert posted 15.25 points.

Third place went to Greg Emslie with 12.60 points and fellow East London surfer Wayne Monk recorded 12.25 points to finish fourth.

The high scoring final featured four of South Africa’s best surfers and was a fitting end to the 2012 domestic surfing season.

The final also decided the winner of the Men’s division on 2012 Pro Surf Tour (PST) with Emslie successfully defending his title thanks to his third place finish on Saturday. If he had ended fourth or lower honours would have gone the way of Redman who came second in the ratings. Event semi finalist Chad du Toit (Durban) was third in this year’s PST.

This was the second year that the 2A rated Guido’s SA Open has taken place at Main Beach in Port Alfred and the second year that local pizzeria, Guido’s, has sponsored the event. More than 40 surfers from all parts of South Africa made the journey to Port Alfred to compete in the event.

Dan, stoked with his Christmas bonus.

The Guido’s SA open offered R10,000 in prize-money, R4,000 of which went to Redman for his victory.
