Dale Staples gets slotted at Backdoor during his Round 3 heat.
After winning his first heat and advancing behind Kelly Slater in his second, Dale Staples narrowly missed out on a spot in the quarter finals when he finished just 1.91pts short of an advancing spot in his Round of 32 heat. As the final horn sounded in his match-up it was local hotshot Mason Ho and fellow Hawaiian Hank Gaskell – who Dale trumped in Round 2 – advancing to the next round.
7-time Pipe Masters champion, Kelly Slater is no stranger to Backdoor.
Through to the the quarter finals and still in contention are Kelly Slater, who is looking to make it back-to-back victories at the Volcom Pipe Pro, and John John Florence, who is aiming for his fourth victory in this event.
The only other Saffa to enter the Volcom Pipe Pro was David Van Zyl, who couldn’t find the scores to advance through his Round 2 heat, which was won by Dale Staples.
