In tough conditions on the opening day of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, Bianca Buitendag advanced directly to Round 3 after winning her opening heat. It was the last heat of the day as the waves began to fade at the Rincon section of the famous point. Currently lying third in the world rankings, the goofyfoot from the Southern Cape won’t need to surf Round 2 after finding two good scores to advance in first place with a heat total of 11.67pts.
Bianca managed to find two good scoring rides in the messy conditions.
Despite scoring a higher heat total, Dream Tour ratings leader, Carissa Moore, will need to get through Round 2 in order to keep up the momentum she gained by winning the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. The Hawaiian finished second in her heat to Australian, Dimity Stoyle, who scored the day’s highest heat total of 15.76 on her way to victory in Heat 3.
Carissa Moore scored the highest single wave score of the day, but still lost to Australia’s Dimity Stoyle.
Another big name to lose on the opening day was current world number two, Tyler Wright, who couldn’t find the waves needed to win her heat in the tricky conditions. The Australian will be hoping for a better result in Round 2 if she is to stay ahead of Bianca in the world title race.
