“I started shooting surfing at the begining of the year, so I’m very new to the world of photography. I was always passionate about the surf, as I used to bodyboard and now surf a lot. So, I bought myself a GoPro to film some random cool stuff and decided to film my friends surfing. Eventually I got hooked and started to take images rather than videos and slowly learnt to get my positioning right ( you have to be super close with a GoPro).”
“My first really epic shot was of Jordy Smith at New Pier doing a sick air reverse which got published internationally in the ASL (Australian Surfing Life) – from then I was hooked. I just wanted to nail a good shot again.”
“With help from guys like Pat Flanagan, Alan van Gysen and Chris van Lennep, I’ve learnt so much about the world of surf photography, which led to more coverage in Zigzag and TheBombsurf and some online stuff. I recently got a new Camera (650D) with a Tokina Fisheye lens and with some help from Brother Housings I managed to put a real water setup together, which i have now just started using and is making a big difference to my images.”
“I love what I do and am always keen to learn and help others. It’s my passion. You don’t need all the money in the world or the best gear, it makes your job easier, but at the end of the day if you understand your gear and the surfers, then you will nail those shots. Surf photography is an amazing thing, you capture moments at 1/100 of a second and show those moments to the world. That is what has captured me! Shot!” – Matthew van Wieringen
Met Matt snapping one morning at Bronze early this year. Super great guy and he’s just getting better with every session. Keep up the amazing work bru! Good luck pursuing your dream.
