The 2012 Annual Kommetjie Festival kicked off to a hilarious start despite cold and windy conditions down at Longbeach for the much anticipated surfing event. Surfers and spectators were met with a solid onshore cold front and 4-5 foot waves pounding the beach. It was cold and wet for all, but nothing a pair of Wellingtons and a bottle of Old Brown sherry couldn’t remedy. What makes this event different, and so well attended, is that it is not so much a competition as it is just a fun-filled display of ridiculous outfits and craft, and a community of surfers and friends enjoying a day at the beach. Some would say this is what surfing is really about.
