For the last five years I have been going to San Francisco (Mavericks) and Hawaii for the Northern Hemisphere winter. I have always wanted to surf Puerto Escondido, so this year I left a month earlier than I normally do and headed down. It took almost three days to get there, but it was definitely worth it – I am actually pretty bummed that this was my first time there.
Greg Long has been coming here for years and he organized a ridiculously kiff apartment for me for a month. I had my own kitchen, balcony with hammock, amazing room and a maid that came every day to clean the place while you’re surfing.
Every day it blows offshore in the mornings and the evenings, so the routine here is to wake up at about 6:00am and surf for a couple of hours, then head back home for breakfast. During the day it gets really hot, so most days are spent in the hammock for a siesta or at the pool. Then at about 4:00pm, like clockwork, the offshore starts to blow again, so if you feeling up for it you either surf again or head to the beach for a couple ice cold Corona’s. Either way Coronas in the evening are standard.
Dinner time was a toughie; the food there is seriously out of control it’s so good. You can either go to the market and buy your own food, which is really cheap and fresh. Or you can go to one of the 100’s of restaurants around here and have the best Mexican food you could imagine for next to nothing. After dinner normally consists of another couple Coronas and a game of table tennis at the hotel and by 10:00pm everyone is pretty exhausted, so off to bed and ready for the same cycle the next day.
I met up with photographer Eugene van der Elst for the last two weeks of my trip, and besides catching giant sailfish he also took some epic pics. Here’s a look at a couple.
