After five incredible days of surfing at the wavepark of The Point, the champions were crowned, the Springbok blazers were handed out, the trophies won, the ballies were stoked and the groms throats needed soothing after all the cheering and team spirit. Eastern Province may have walked away with their first ever SA Champs team victory, but perhaps the highlight was the undeniable rise in the talent and polish of the junior competitors in this year’s champs.
With parents like Frankie Oberholzer, Wayne Monk and Mike Burness (to name a few) standing on the rocks and offering advice, and professional coaches like Hynsie, Quintin Jones and Llewellyn Whittaker to guide the competitors, the focus on junior surfing in this country has increased exponentially, and it shows in the performances of this country’s future stars.
The groms are in good hands, and if the focus continues we can expect to see a few more South African surfers challenging for a world title against the current dominance of world surfing big hitters like Australia, the USA and Brazil.
