Our We Make It Sic competition is buzzing like a bandsaw, and so far we’ve received 22 excellent entries. These will be judged in the ‘Innovation’, ‘Craftmanship’ and ‘Functionality’ categories as we determine our DIY champs, and the winner of each will claim R10 000 worth of power tools from Bosch and Dremel.
Last year, Patrick Peggs won the ‘Craftmanship’ category with this custom surf bar.
What you build is entirely up to you, just as long as it has something to do with surfing. To give you an idea, let’s take a look at two of the entries we’ve received this year.
This epic light box was crafted by Jared Sanders-Perrin to set the mood in the baby room for the arrival of his future surf champion. We love the way it casts a warm shadow on the wall, like the silhouette of a surfer hitting the dawnie.
“This box was made using old off-cut pieces of perspex and wood,” explained Jared. “I put it together using only a Stanley knife and a blunt hacksaw blade, some misfit screws and a lick of paint. Imagine what I could make with some decent tools!”
Should Jared’s light box be decided as one of our WE MAKE IT SIC winners, some more than decent tools is exactly what he will win.
We were also impressed with this wooden carving by Keith Barnes.
“Here is a surfing wave complete with surfer and dolphins carved from local indigenous woods,” explained Keith about his creation.
