One of the few things capable of putting a bummer on an epic surf session, is dealing with trash on the beach or in the water at your local. Fortunately, there’s plenty of enthusiastic and environmentally conscience cleaners sprinkled into SA’s surfing community who have been making a difference through our Tuffy Clean Your Beach competition.
If you haven’t already, check out Gareth Hubbard’s winning video entry for the last leg of our Tuffy Beach Clean-Up competition, which wins him a brand new Firewire from Share The Stoke Foundation.
When looking back through the archive from the past eight months of competition, the 61 unique entries we’ve received from all over South Africa and abroad, equates to hundreds of Tuffy bin-bags – all filled to the brim and removed from our beloved beaches. From Seapoint to Sumatra, dozens of beaches have been cleared of litter – helping to conserve our all important marine fauna and flora.
While the comp is over for now, we look forward to another possible partnership in the year ahead to keep Mzansi shining. Before that happens, feel free to keep your corner of the coast clean and send us the evidence if you’re feeling inspired – like this late entry from Natalie Gorven:
Natalie Gorven and company, with their 580kgs of rubbish collected from Blue Lagoon last month.
“Howzit! I held a cleanup in Jan and we collected a record best of 580kgs. The image is of 89 Tuffy bags that were filled at the Blue Lagoon beach along with one massive tyre.”
“Best of all, our waste disposal sponsor separates all the trash and recycles what they can. Thanks so much for holding this kiff comp, encouraging the peeps to participate in such a worthy cause. Afterall every bit really does count!” – Natalie Gorven
Watch the Zag crew kick off the comp last year July, doing some damage control of our own at the Umngeni River mouth.
