Shane Sykes from Salt Rock, KZN, is the winner of Volcom South Africa’s TCT “Rhinofish” video trials in association with Monster Energy and Zigzag Surfing Magazine. Shane’s entry, which he edited himself, showcased a minute of his explosive surfing from around the globe, ripping up the face and flaring above the lip. As part of his prize, the 19 year old will be flying off to California to compete for US$30, 000 in Volcom’s internationally recognised 2016 Totally Crustaceous Tour Global Championships, taking place June 14-17 at one of the world’s most rippable waves, Lower Trestles.
Zag tracked down Shane, who is on location for a Surfer Magazine feature in the Telo Islands. “I’m so stoked on the win and psyched to be going back to California. I cant wait to surf Trestles with only three other people in the water, this really is a dream come true.”

The competition called for any South African surfer under the age of 20 to submit a one-minute-video clip showcasing their skills. A total of 15 entrants from all across South Africa uploaded their videos to the TCT platform over a four week period. Public voting was open throughout the contest allowing the public to have their say, with contestants hoping to grab the public’s attention, using social media to collect votes from viewers, peers and friends.
The winner was decided by a judging panel of representatives from Volcom and Zigzag, with the public vote making up 1/3 of the final decision.
In addition, a prize for the best edited clip was introduced to the competition. Plenty sick edits caught the attention of the judges and the public, but in the end, Dane Staples will be taking home the prize for ‘Best Edit’ for his video of Jordy Maree’s entry. Congratulations to Dane and Jordy. Dane will receive a R5000 hamper from Volcom for his efforts.

‘I am absolutely blown away by the amazing clips that have come through.” Said Paul Canning, brand manager of Volcom SA. “The level of surfing by all the submissions is really high and it shows that there is plenty of talent coming through in South Africa.”
On behalf of Volcom we would like to congratulate Shane Sykes on winning the entry into the Totally Crustaceous Tour Global Championships and wish him all the best at Trestles.”
Congratulations once again to Shane for his victory as the official winner of Volcom South Africa’s TCT “Rhinofish” video trials. For his effort, Shane walks away with a trip to California (airfare, accomodation and transport included), bragging rights, and a US$500 shopping spree at the Volcom Headquaters while in California. We’re pretty sure Shane will be receiving a few high fives too.
