R3500 Raised for 9 Miles Clubhouse

Last Friday, after a full days surfing topped off with some lekker boeries, the groms from the 9 Miles Project in Strandfontein, Cape Town, were treated to a fresh pile of new Zag’s latest Issue (38.8). Jamie, the man behind the wheels of African Soul Surfer in Muizies Corner, who hosted the event, had this to say:

The event was held to raise funds for fixing up the 9 Miles kids’ clubhouse at Strandfontein Pavillion and we managed to raise just over R3500.

An awesome time was had by all. The kids surfed themselves sut, ate all the boeries we could cook, and watched some big screen surf flicks. There was a great turnout of about 200 people who supported and came to see Chris Abrehem’s exhibition of paintings. Then later, we all  rocked out to a live performance by The West Coast Wolves.

The 9 Miles Project is a grassroots NGO run by Nigel Savel and his young team of dedicated surfers from the Strandfontein community. Their project focuses on the youth (up to 16) from a really tough part of Strandfontein, the 7de Laan location, which is a stones throw from the cooking waves at 9 Miles Reef. The kids go to school, work hard, and are then rewarded with surfing and other wholesome activities after school everyday. It keeps them busy, motivated, away from gangs and most importantly – stoked!

African Soul Surfer is equally stoked to be involved with this remarkable project and these awesome kids. Surfing is a lifestyle and a life well lived, and to see how it’s transforming these kids from potential gangsters into frothing little surf groms is a true blessing. This project is certainly changing lives. Big ups to Nigel, Robyn and the crew for doing what you do, and to the Zag for getting behind them and sharing the stoke!
