Evidence that this wave assassin takes his barrel hunting serious is in his passport, which is filled with stamps from surfing hotspots around the world. His search for the perfect pit has taken him from Gonubie to G-Land, Madagascar to Morocco and back for more.
Meet this week’s Surf Ninja, Justin Devos…
NAME: Justin ‘Crusty Crustacean’ Devos
AGE: 34
LOCAL SPOT: East London
BEST THING ABOUT SURFING?
Surfing uncrowded cooking waves with no one around, while okes literally fight over waves around the corner. Slummies guys are not so keen on the crowd.
WORST THING ABOUT SURFING?
Ocean pollution, depletion and exploitation. One example; there is a world class wave in Morocco you can’t surf because of a siff fertilizer factory right in front of it. Makes me so bleak. Surfers can make a difference – clean you beach, bru! Get involved with your local and not so local environmental affairs.
TO MAKE A LIVING I..?
Build voice, data and wireless networks.
THREE TRACKS THAT HELP YOU SHRED?
Bush – Machinehead
The Rural Alberto Advantage – Muscle Relaxants
Some chilled Finley Quaye for a post session wind down.
BEST SURFER IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW?
I dig watching the Hobgoods surf and have a lot of respect for those okes.
DAWNIE OR ARVO SESH?
The early riser catches the rides, bru.
WHICH SPOT DO YOU HAVE TO SURF BEFORE YOU DIE?
P-Pass in Micronesia.
WHEN YOU ARE NOT SURFING, YOU CAN BE FOUND WHERE?
Taking photos, travelling or in my cubical at work.
GREATEST FEAR?
The bogus theory of Darwinism (basically – macro evolution), which tries to defy the fact that we were all created by God.
BEST SURFING MEMORY?
We got some Indo locals to take us out to a remote uninhabited island off another remote island. We had to get permission from the local chief because some Aussie tried to set up a camp there, flew an Australian flag and got bounced by the Indonesian army. We took food and water and just camped and surfed.
I know this guy… I think he is more like a Surf Samurai. No cheap assassin tricks for this guy. He is all class all the time.
