Amped to learn more about the salty playground in which he has spent years growing his repertoire of wave-slaying skills, this Kom local is studying oceanography at UCT. And if you watch him demolish the lip of a tricky section, you’ll soon realise he is a keen student.
Meet this week’s Surf Ninja, Daniel Wilson…
NAME: Daniel Wilson
LOCAL SPOT: Mainly around Kommetjie.
BEST THING ABOUT SURFING?
Getting barrelled for sure. But just being in the ocean is also pretty epic.
WORST THING ABOUT SURFING?
The fortune you spend on petrol every month. Don’t smaak crowds either.
TO MAKE A LIVING I..?
Am studying oceanography and marine biology at UCT.
THREE TRACKS THAT HELP YOU SHRED?
The Wine Song – Cat Empire
I Smoke Two Joints – Bob Marley
Riptide – Vance Joy
BEST SURFER IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW?
That mad man, Medina.
DAWNIE OR ARVO SESH?
A winter dawnie in Cape Town is pretty tough, so probably a late arvo session when it has warmed up.
WHICH SPOT DO YOU HAVE TO SURF BEFORE YOU DIE?
Skeleton Bay – goofyfoot heaven.
WHEN YOU ARE NOT SURFING, YOU CAN BE FOUND WHERE?
Probably on campus or stuck in traffic, but if not then I’m chilling in the Kom or looking for waves.
Having to live somewhere away from the ocean.
BEST SURFING MEMORY?
Those camping trips up the Weskus with mates. It’s tough living, but you score cooking waves and the beer is cheap, so you always have a jol.
