Mossel Bay’s very own surfing world champ, Shaun Joubert, has been included among a select list of 16 unsponsored surfers to compete in the USA’s longest running event – the O’Neill Coldwater Classic at Steamer Lane.
Steamer Lane is a venue steeped in tradition.
In previous years, the event has been everything from a domestic tour event, a 6-star Prime WQS event and even a World Tour event in 2012, but this year the Coldwater Classic will be shining a light on the blue-collar competitors – with only unsponsored surfers invited.
With a full sponsorship from O’Neill, as well as US$50,000 dollars in cash to chase the WQS, the event offers an enticing prize for the invitees, and everyone back home will be holding thumbs that our homeboy comes out on top and gets back on tour.
With moves like this on demand, Shaun deserves to be on tour.
The event kicks-off today, and you can follow Shaun’s progress on http://www.oneill.com/cwc
