Following the recent death of a French honeymooner in May, it has been reported that another French holiday maker has lost their life to a shark off Reunion Island.
The attack took place this afternoon in the bay of Saint-Paul between 3 – 5 metres from shore and in water less than a metre deep, and was of a particular vicious nature as the shark bit the 15 year-old girl’s body in two. Police managed to recover her torso, but are still searching for her legs.
A source in Reunion, who just last night was having dinner with a marine expert, suggests that there’s currently a huge number of sharks off Reunion Island – with estimates ranging between 1,000 and 10,000 active sharks in a 40km stretch between the Port and the popular St Leu.
Locals are already up in arms over the large number of recent attacks off Reunion, even picketing outside the mayors office calling for the culling of sharks. As yet there are no clear answers for the dramatic increase in attacks over the past few years.
Clearly the reason for the Reunion shark population is they are not part of the shark fin trade…
Poor girl .To think I went there with my wife on honey moon and got to surf St Leu in 2007 .
Surely must be the fish processing plant that is driving the sharks insane.
Although the Zambezi is already an insanely aggressive shark….you can just imagine how many sharks there are there now for this to happen in less than 1m of water.
This is going to kill the tourism there .
