The sad news of the passing of renowned surfboard shaper Marc Spowart came as a shock yesterday, adding a dose of sadness to the festive season. Marc’s untimely death sees another of SA’s finest craftsman depart our world, following Errol Hickman’s passing in early November.
A Bluff local and a standout when Cave Rock was doing it’s thing, Marc has left behind a lasting impression on those that knew him.
“RIP Marc Spowart! You shaped me some of my best boards! My thoughts go out to your family…” wrote former team rider Dale Staples.
Spowy’s shapes and sense of humour will be sorely missed by the South African surfing family.
RIP SPOWY
RIP Marc, you shaped some of my best boards back in the day. It was a true privilege to have known you. Condolences to his family. Peter.
Very sad news. Mark and I plus all the original Ansteys, Brighton and Crossway lighties shared some life defining times on the Bluff beaches….

SINCE 1995 WE HAD A SPECIAL AND UNIQUE FRIENDSHIP! NO HIPOCRITS ! NO PUSSY’S! MOST OF THE TIME WE AGREE TO DISAGREE!!! BUT ALL THE TIME WITH A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOUR AND A LOT OF JOCKING!!! THE JEWELL SURFBOARD HE OFFERED ME FOR MY BIRTHDAY IN FRANCE IS A PART OF MY BEST SURFING FEELING! TO HIS FAMILY MY DEEPEST CONDOLENCES AND MY LOVE TO HID DAUGHTER AND SON! FROGGY.
As lighties we started surfing at Brighton, and you shaped some of my boards. R.I.P my friend, till we meet again.
