A ‘Heads Up’ call has been given for the possible running of the speciality Quiksilver Goodwave at New Pier this Thursday or Friday. If swell predictions are accurate, then Durban’s premier surf spot should cook for 32 of the country’s most accomplished and exciting surfers – some of whom will be frantically checking flights and clearing schedules in case the green light gets given later this week.
There’s some serious purple blotches currently dotting the wave forecasts, with Cape Town getting klapped by a big one this coming Saturday. However, proceeding that there’s another storm further east that is whipping up a solid south swell that should fill in the east coast with some solid lines as early as Thursday morning.
Swell forecaster for the event, Spike from Wavescape, has predicted the following for this coming Thursday – “Classic long range south swell with 16 second pulses, but VERY long lulls at first. Town will be 3-4′ with long gaps in the morning, then glassy 4-5’ sets are feasible in the arvi. On Friday Town eases to 3-4’ and more inconsistent.”
4-5ft on Thursday? That’s not big enough! Well, yes and no – while this swell might not be as big as previous swells the organisers have chosen to lift their noses at, the sandbank at New Pier is quite possibly as good as it gets right now, so, 4-5 foot lines rolling across a perfectly sculpted bank sounds pretty good, and that’s exactly what the Quiksilver Goodwave is all about.
Stay tuned here, or on www.goodwave.co.za to see if Neptune delivers this Thursday, and if we get to see the first running of this prestigious event since 2008.
