The 100ft wave was reportedly surfed earlier this week in Nazare, Portugal. It’s the second time Hawaiian big wave surfer Garret McNamara has claimed he has smashed the Guinness World Record. The first time his reported 90 foot wave was measured at 77.76 foot (but still secured the record), and this Monday Garret claimed to have ridden one even bigger, cracking the 100 foot mark.

There’s been plenty of debate on forums and comment boards across the surfing globe, as Garret’s exceptional PR team sell the heck out of his potentially record-breaking feat – even securing a live interview on major news network CNN

While there’s no denying that the Hawaiian is an absolute charger, most of the online vitriol stems from that age old surfing tradition of never claiming your ride – something Garret’s PR team aren’t shy of doing.

Either way, big wave surfing is starting to gain a lot more interest across the globe – the Big Wave World Tour (BWWT) have just finished their first ever qualifying event in Spain, so surf fans across the globe can look forward to more limits being pushed over the coming years.

You can compare it to his previous record below, which was measured at 77.76 feet.
