Earlier this year we introduced you to Christian Surfers and highlighted their mission to Namibia – where they have been doing their small part in helping develop surfing in the Swakopmund area from the roots up, by co-hosting the annual Swakop Pro Surf Contest.
The group have also leant their weight in assisting behind the scenes at various surf contests around the country, and especially in their home base of Jeffreys Bay – where they were seen lending a helping hand wherever they were needed at the recent Hurley SA Junior Surfing Champs.
Tireless in their quest to prove that actions speak louder than words, Christian Surfers (and Christian Skaters) are about to embark on a six week East Coast Roadshow – where they hope to connect with like-minded surfers and skaters in six different towns through fun and alternative events to have a jol while spreading their brand of stoke.
The roadshow kicks-off this weekend (12 October) in J-Bay at Kitchen Windows, before moving on to Mossel Bay, Knysna, George, East London and Port Alfred, and according to their website – each stop is built around a board-riding culture, hosting a number of unique surf and skate contests (details below).
In addition to the surfing and skating events, they will also be hosting premieres of ‘The Perfect Wave’ – by South African filmmaker Bruce Macdonald and featuring Cape Town shredder Matt Bromley.
Check out the trailer.
So, if you’re keen to get involved in a day of fun-filled boardriding action, then check out the schedule below for the dates that Christian Surfers will be visiting your town.

EVENT DESCRIPTIONS:
THE JESUS SOULFUL SWITCHUP:
To succeed as a competitive surfer nowadays it requires you to connect speed, power and flow with explosive as well as new school maneuvers. However we all started surfing not to be competitive, but to have fun. This contest format seeks to allow for both the fun factor as well as a new look at connecting these two spheres of high end competitive surfing.
The contest will run as follows:
25 minute heats during which two boards must be surfed. Competitors will be judged on performance and soul style and will be given pre-determined points based on the boards they choose to ride. They are allowed to switch boards at any time during the heat. The best wave on each board will count for their final score, giving a two wave heat score.
Board rating system:
very weird – 6
alaia – 5
retro – 4
fish – 2
longboard – 2
shortboard 0
JESUS TRIPLE TIER SKATE JAM:
The idea is three obstacles, 3 tricks. 1 winner.
You have a jam session for 20 minutes where everyone skates the one obstacle, Judges score the skaters for the best trick, based on style and difficulty. After 20 minutes you move over to a free skate of 10 minutes on the new obstacle and then start the 20 minute jam again. After all three obstacles are complete you add the 3 scores together giving you a 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
POKER RUN:
As much as competitive surfing has broadened its horizons and popularised different surf craft, so the same has happened in skating. The advent of cruisers, downhill races and even long-board styled riding has created a re-evolution in the performance skateboard. We are reconnecting with the fun…
A poker run is a cruise from point A-B. Along the way at predetermined checkpoints riders collect a poker card. At the end of the run all 5 cards are put together to see who has the winning poker hand. The winning hand wins the prize, not the first person home. It doesn’t matter what you ride. These are fun events for the whole family and can involve everyone! Your choice: skate, cycle, run, etc.
