Without the support of our readers and advertisers, Zigzag would cease to exist. Thankfully, for the past 38 years our stoke and hard work has been rewarded by both and we’ve been lucky enough to keep on producing SA’s favourite surf mag.
The list of memorable adverts seen in Zigzag since ’76 is a long one, but while browsing our archives this week this collection of classic ads caught our eye.

Some adverts were quite…what’s the word for it? Let’s say ‘creative’…
Remaining ‘core’ has long been the focus (above and below).
As has searching (above and below).
We can’t recall who was more famous. The Reef Brazil models (Rachel in issue 22.4), or Chris Malloy?
Lizzard’s graphic designer was in top form for these.
Back in the 70s, cruising the coast in a speedo wasn’t out of the ordinary.
There’s no hiding the fact that surfing has a bright and colourful past.
HOWS THE MCD AD, SHANE “SCABS” WARREN , HA HAHA
I used to smaak those Biotribe ads with the skeleton – that was kiff
martin potter…..eish cuz…
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the nostalgia. It’s such a shame that so many surf brands of the past never made it financially, and closed shop. Remember, Bear, Body Glove, Local Motion, SMP and so on…
Did they not adapt and re-invent themselves? Did they simply run out of cash flow? Poor management? Who knows? I am currently visiting New Zealand and I work in retail. Most guys with cash want to start their own brands and tap into the youth culture. They make bigger margins becoming a retailer of a new brand.
I sold out. I sell to chain commercial chain stores the only guys who pay on time and actually pay you!
All these guys in NZ want to know if I want to take their brands to SA. I am like no effing way! No money it!
Only guys dominating the market in SA are Hurley!
Get out there guys go support your local surf shop and don’t wait for those freakin sales.
PS: Jev, that’s a free beer right their buddy.
Does anyone who is the artist of the Lizzard ads
