It was another close call amongst the judges in the second leg of the Monster Energy Pitstop powered by Zigzag in association with O’Neill and iON Action Cameras. Nic Von Rupp from Monster and Paul Canning from O’Neill had split their votes between Dale Staples and Benji Brand respectively, with Benji also securing a hefty 28% of the public vote. A lot of discussion followed and plenty of replays of all the entries, after which the Zag judge casted the deciding vote, making Benji Brand the second leg winner of the Monster Energy Pitstop.
Benji Brand’s entry into the second leg of the Monster Energy Pitstop.
“It is an absolute cracker of a wave and Benji rides it perfectly,” said Paul Canning, who also voted for Benji’s ride. “In the end I thought that the incredible amount of time Benji stays in the barrel and the multiple spits prove just how deep he actually gets on a few occasions on this wave.”
Every time we watched it, we were left speechless. It’s hypnotising.
As well as claiming both an iON Air Pro Wifi Lite and a R5 000 hamper from O’Neill for being the videographer and the surfer, Benji also joins leg 1 winner Dustin Wilson as the second finalist in line for the ‘Pit of the Year’ grand prize worth *R30 000.

HOW THE VOTING WORKS:
• The public vote and judging panel’s vote is split 50-50
• This means each of the three judge’s votes count 16.67% of the overall vote (to make up the judges’ 50% of the vote).
• The public vote for each surfer is then worked out as a percentage of the total number of public votes across all contestants and divided by two to work out how much it contributes to the other 50%.
It sounds complicated, but makes sense when you do the sums. So let’s do the maths for the top two rides who were in the running this month:
Benji Brand
2x judge’s vote = 33.34%
Total public votes across all the contestants = 526
Benji’s public votes: 147 votes = 27.95% of 526 / 2 = 13.97%
= 47.31% of votes overall
Dale Staples
1x judge’s votes = 16.67%
Total public votes across all the contestants = 526
Dale’s public votes: 45 votes = 8.56% of 526 / 2 = 4.28%
= 20.95% of votes overall
* Pit of the Year prize includes:
• R15 000 to the winning surfer
• R10 000 to the winning videographer
• An iON Air Pro 3 WiFi worth R5 000
